Weekend translation
子供たちが小さくても、色々勉強したい。大好きな山根さんの楽曲の歌詞がお題目なら継続できるかな、という超私的な魂胆。

注：歌詞の背景、状況説明は私の勝手な個人的日本語解釈で進めています。バイリンガル講師がなかなか見つからず、講師が日本語が分からないためにどうしても説明が多分に必要だからです。
#08 CLOUD 9
今回の先生はアメリカ人のA先生。
前回すごく丁寧にアドバイスしてくれたので再び！(*^-^*)プロのライターさんみたいです。
There are three characters.
1: This guy
2: “You” whom he encourages
3: “His girlfriend” who scolded him
The second character, “You,” means us. The listener of this song.
歌詞の中で、登場人物は3人います。
１：この彼
２：彼が励ます「君」
３：僕を叱った「彼女」
2番目の登場人物である「君」は我々リスナーのことです。
In the first half of the lyrics, he recalls his boyhood. He was dreaming of the future and looking for something to do.
And he encourages us to spread our wings toward the future.
歌詞の前半では、彼は少年の頃を思い出しています。未来を夢見て、何かを探していました。
そして彼は我々に「未来に向かって羽ばたけ」と励まします。
In the middle of the lyrics, he remembers her scolding him. He vows to her that he will continue to chase his dreams.
歌詞の中盤で彼は、彼女が叱ってくれたことを思い出します。彼は夢を追いかけ続けることを彼女に誓います。
In the last verse, he encourages her, “I will give you my smile,” as she is hurting and suffering. This “you” is a metaphor for the listeners of this song.
最後の一節では、辛い思いをし傷ついている彼女に向かって彼は「僕の笑顔をあげよう」と励まします。歌詞の中では彼女なのですが実はこの「君」は私達、曲の聞き手の隠喩です。
OK, good start.
“I always do anything halfway.”
‘always’ and ‘anything’ don’t work together.
“always do everything.” or “I often do anything.”
So it does depend on what he’s saying
Is he really saying that literally anything he watches?
ここで「always」と「anything」は同じ文章では使えません。彼の言うことにも寄るのだけど、文字通りでいいの？
Always halfway.
「いつも中途半端」と言いたいです。
“I always do everything halfway.” and “you scolded me on that day. Never bury my dreams. I swear.” It doesn’t make sense to me. “Never buried my dreams.” What does that have to do with “I always do everything halfway.”?
では「anything」ではなくて「everything」にしましょう。そして、「僕を叱ったあの日」と「夢を忘れない」これが「いつも中途半端」とどうつながっているの？ちょっとわからないわ。
Before he swore that he never forget his dreams, he sometimes felt like giving up chasing them. But this time he made his decision again.
「もう夢を忘れない」と彼女に約束する前に、彼は何度か挫けそうになったんです。でも今回彼女に叱られたことで、もう一度夢を追いかけると決心しました。

“Never again will I bury my dreams”
Inversion is something we do for emphasis, formality, or style.
そうなのね、では「夢を二度と忘れない。」としましょう。語彙の順を入れ替えるとフォーマルに「決して〜しない」の強調になります。
キター！「Never will I」構文！たまに映画で聞くけど…。
※レッスン後、主人に聞いてみました。北米時代にこの「Never will I」を日常会話で使ったか？と。答えは「は？使うかそんな文。」

That’s the grammatic issue. Now let’s go ahead and make things a little bit more poetic.
And actually, I just might start on this line again with “scolded”.
文法的な問題はこれだけです。さあ、今から全体的に詩的にしていきましょうか。えっと、「叱る」が気になっているの。
そう、それ先生に聞きたかったの！私もscoldedは違和感あるんです。
“scolded” comes across as much more as a mother lecturing her child for running when he shouldn’t. It doesn’t come across as a lover trying to help her boyfriend.
What would be better options?
「scold/叱る」は母親が子供に使う言葉です。恋人が彼氏に言う言葉じゃないから、どうしようかな。

そう言ってA先生がスクリーンシェアしてくれたのは、「thesaurus.com」。これは類語辞典サイトです。私もたまに使います(*^-^*)ネイティブのプロライターもシソーラス使うんやね。
So if we come here and we search it, “scolded”. Better option?
「scold/叱る」よりもふさわしい言葉を探してみましょう。
punishedを始め、類義語がたくさん表示されています。
“admonish,” I think it would be a really good one.
Or, “chasten” do you know what these two words mean?
「admonish/諭す」は良いね。それか、「chasten/懲らしめる・鍛える」とか。この２つの言葉の意味知ってる？

So “admonish” is going to be “worn” for emphasis…
“chasten” would be “correct”… a little bit a strong word.
Or “chastise”… actually a good one.
「admonish/諭す」は警告することを強調するときに使います。「chasten/懲らしめる・鍛える」は「正す」かな…ちょっと強い言葉です。それか「chastise/責める」もいいですね。
“I always do everything halfway, and you chastised me on that day.” Then it is the girlfriend coming in and said like “I believe in you. You’re so much better than this. You are doing something wrong.” And I think they can do so much better. Is that okay?
「いつも中途半端な僕、そして君はあの日僕を責めた。」そしてこの彼女は「あなたの実力を信じてるの、今のあなたは少し間違ってる、あなたはもっとすごい人だもの」となった。そして二人の関係はもっと良いものになった、そんな感じ？
先生は”chastise”（責める/非難する）が良いと言いましたが、私は日本語の流れを考慮して”admonish”（さとす/指摘する/気づかせる）が良いと思います。
Now this sentence up here is written in… it’s good, and it uses a lot of poetic terms, but I think you can make it more poetic.
ここまで…上手く書けているのよ、たくさん詩的表現もあるし。さあ、もう少し詩的にしていきましょう。

For example, if we say I was “just” a boy.
“Looking ahead while being blown by a refreshing breeze.” Does this mean that he was standing still? The breeze was on him? Or the breeze was pushing him from one place to another?
「風に吹かれながら」という箇所だけど、これは、彼がただ突っ立ってるということ？風が吹いている中。それか、風は彼を動かすくらいに吹いている感じ？
Second one.
2番目のやつです。
“with a breeze kissing my face.” that would be a little bit more poetic.
じゃあ、「風が僕にキスをしながら」は？少し詩的でしょう？
おお！「風に吹かれる」が「kissing my face」になったぞー！
実際のところ、「風に吹かれながら夢見て」に関しては「風のように誰に流されることなく思うがままに夢を追う」という意味がGood-bye Love Roadを考慮しても伝わってきます。ここには「風のような自由さ」が隠喩であったほうが良いなと思ったのですが…。ちょっと日本語の温度が変わってしまったかな。
Now we do also have past tense here, present tense hear. I think that would be good to have this be in the ing forms.
“Wanting to seek something, wanting to find something.”
I would actually put them… I’m not sure how it is in the lyrics… but I think having it the other way around is better. Because then the journey is before the destination.
過去形と現在型があるのだけど、ing型にしましょうか。「何かを見つけたかった」はing型で「何かを探したくて、何かを見つけたくて」。「探す」と「見つける」の順番を入れ変えました。そっちのほうが自然だと思います。だって旅立ちは目的地を見つける前だから。
あー、うんうん、日本語では両者の意味がほぼ同じだから気にならないけど、私が「find」「seek」使ったからだな。しかしこういうのにすぐ気付けるのって、やっぱりこの先生すごい。
“lose”… “doesn’t lose a game” or what does that mean?
「そうさ君なら誰にも負けないはず」…は「勝負に負けない」ってこと？どういうこと？
You can do anything with your enthusiasm.
「情熱さえあれば君なら何でもできる」ということを言いたいです。
OK… if we add the word “anymore”… “You can’t lose to anyone anymore.” then it put a sense of hope, you become stronger, you become better.
そうね…「anymore」を使おうかな…。「君はもう誰にも何にも負けないよ」これで希望や強さを表せられる。
うんうん！すごい！anymoreひとつでニュアンス変わるね！

The song was released as a single in celebration of his 20th anniversary as a musician.
After the Great East Japan earthquake (March 11, 2011), he went to the disaster area and brought his music to the victims. The following year, he released this song. This song contains his message “Want to bring courage to everyone through music”.
I always cry when I listen to this song at his concerts.
山根康広さんの20周年記念シングルです。
山根さんは東日本大震災の後、その年に被災地に実際に行かれ楽曲を被災者に披露されました。そのご経験の翌年、この曲をリリースされました。この曲には「音楽で勇気を届けてみんなを元気にしたい」というそんなメッセージが詰まっています。
私はライブ会場でこの曲を歌われると泣いてしまいます。
そのエピソードを聞き、私はとても嬉しく思いました。お若い頃から、全然お変わりない音楽への姿勢…。
森友嵐士さんから連絡を受けたという、90年代ヒットのミリオンアーティストの集いは一度断られたというのに、
こういうイベントには返事二の次で行くという…。
ご自身の潜在ファン、元ファンがいてもおかしくないステージよりも、とにかく困っている被災者に音楽で勇気を届けたい、という気持ちには心を打たれました。
今また、どんなに自分が彼の楽曲にこれまで励まされてきたかを実感します。

レッスン中に怒涛のように講師から説明が来ます。この時の彼の気持ちは？これは誰を指してるの？何かにひっかけているの？など背景を説明しなければいけないので、申し訳ないのですが、もう個人的解釈で進めています。
「筆者は何を言いたかったのか？」「ここにどんな意味が隠れている？」
隠喩の解釈と説明は国語力の問題だと身に染みます( ﾉД`)。出口先生の現代文の参考書大人用も買ってみようかな。出口本は高校時代ホントお世話になったよー。
